How to Configure and Check Mail (POP) on Mobile Devices While modern email usage heavily favors IMAP for real-time syncing across multiple devices, Post Office Protocol (POP) remains a reliable choice for users who prefer downloading emails to a single device. POP downloads messages from a server to your device and, by default, deletes them from the server.

This guide will walk you through configuring and checking POP email accounts on both Android and iOS devices. Part 1: Prerequisites – Gathering Your Settings

Before configuring your mobile app, you need specific information from your email provider (e.g., Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook, or private domain host): POP Server Name: (e.g., pop.gmail.com or ://yourdomain.com) POP Port: Usually 995 (for SSL) or 110 (no SSL).

SMTP Server Name: (e.g., smtp.gmail.com or ://yourdomain.com) SMTP Port: Usually 465 or 587. Username/Password: Your full email address and password. Part 2: Configuring POP Email on Android

The native Gmail app is commonly used, but the steps are similar for other email apps.

Open the App: Open Gmail and tap your profile picture in the top right, then select Add another account.

Choose Account Type: Select Other (for private domains) or specific provider types.

Enter Email: Type your email address and choose Manual setup. Select Protocol: Choose POP3. Incoming Server Settings: Username/Password: Enter credentials. Server: Enter the POP server (e.g., pop.gmail.com). Port: Enter 995. Security: Select SSL/TLS. Outgoing Server Settings: SMTP Server: Enter the SMTP server (e.g., smtp.gmail.com). Port: Enter 465 or 587. Security: Select SSL/TLS. Finalize: Click Next and set your account name. Part 3: Configuring POP Email on iOS (iPhone/iPad) Open Settings: Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts. Add Account: Tap Add Account > Other > Add Mail Account.

Enter Credentials: Input Name, Email, and Password, then tap Next. Configure POP: Ensure POP is selected at the top.

Incoming Server Settings: Enter the Hostname (pop.gmail.com), Username, and Password.

Outgoing Server Settings: Enter the SMTP Hostname, Username, and Password. Save: Tap Next and Save. Part 4: Crucial POP Settings (Managing Emails)

Because POP downloads emails, you must configure how the mobile app handles them, especially if you use a desktop computer, too.

Keep a copy on server: In account settings, look for an option named “Leave messages on server” or “Delete from server after X days.” If this is disabled, your phone might delete emails, leaving them inaccessible on your computer.

Security Settings: Ensure you are using SSL/TLS to secure your username and password, particularly for server connections. Part 5: How to Check Your POP Email

Once set up, your mobile device will check for new emails based on the “Fetch” schedule you defined.

Manual Check: Open the app and swipe down on the inbox to refresh.

Automatic Check: Open Settings > Accounts and adjust the Sync Frequency (e.g., every 15 minutes, hourly).

Storage: Be aware that POP downloads mean your inbox files take up local space on your mobile phone.

Disclaimer: Some email providers, like Gmail, require you to specifically “Enable POP” within their web-based settings before your phone can connect. Read Gmail messages on other email clients using POP
